Welcome to a Secret Subject Swap. This week 6 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.
Your “Secret Subject” is:
So there I was, minding my own business …

First, can I say, what a great prompt thanks!
There I was minding my own business, watching TV, and enjoying a much-needed day off from my job as a Server Supervisor at Red Lobster. I’ll never forget it was the Monday morning after Thanksgiving in 1998. I had worked doubles all weekend covering for a few 20-somethings that were more into partying than going to work. I was EXHAUSTED!
I’m laying on my living room couch watching TV when all of a sudden my phone rings. It’s my boss and she says, “Rena, uh there are two detectives standing here and they say they need to talk to you immediately”. Of course, my jaw hits the ground and I say, “what do they want with me? I haven’t done anything!” She then hands the phone to one of the officers.
“Mrs. McDaniel, my name is (I can’t remember) and I’m with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office and we need to speak with you immediately.”
“Okay, can you tell me what it’s about?” I say racking my brain to see what I had done wrong.
“No ma’am we need to sit down and talk with you. Can you come in this afternoon and speak with us?”
“Yes, I guess.”
So, for the rest of the day, my nerves are shot as I imagined all sorts of things that they wanted to talk about, but I couldn’t think of anything I had done wrong.
I arrived at the Sheriff’s office later that afternoon and was taken into an interview room with two detectives. The first thing they do is to play a cassette tape they had in their possession. On the tape, is my old boss talking to another individual and I honestly couldn’t believe my own ears!
You see, my old boss was discussing how he wanted me dead and my husband’s legs broken! I mean come one this is shit you only see in the movies but sure enough, there was my old boss telling a complete stranger that not only did he want them to kill me but there would be a bonus if they rapped and tortured me!
I was in shock, to say the least. They turned off the cassette and pulled out a piece of paper. On this paper was a list of 10 names and mine was at the very top of the list.
“This is a list that we found when we searched his home. It’s a hit list and you’re at the top,” he began, “you don’t have to worry though. He’s in jail. The other person on the tape is an undercover FBI agent and he’s the reason that you’re alive today. He went on to tell me the story of how everything unfolded.
His home had been raided and searched the day after Thanksgiving and they found all kinds of evidence. What I didn’t know is that there was a lot going on behind the scenes that I had no idea about. He was determined to get to me because he was afraid of the things I knew about his business. Things that were highly unethical and illegal. I got scared and I quit. I walked out of the office one day never to return. I didn’t even clear about my desk. He was a scary man and I was his financial services manager. I started noticing things and then I got scared.
He was stealing money on a daily basis from his investors and clients both. He had no morals or conscience and he was a very violent man. It’s funny, I was referred to that job by my SIL as her boss and he was best friends. Somehow he came out unscathed. I wish I could find out the results online, but I have searched for hours. The only thing I can think small town & 1990’s.
The things that I did not know:
- He had filed a police report saying that my husband and I had broken into his office and stolen from him. (They found the things that we had supposedly stolen in his basement during the raid on his house. That was actually what put him on their radar! They could tell he was lying.
- He had his “mistress” try to get my daughter out of school (she was 5), but luckily the school knew me well and called me first. I said, “absolutely not, walk her to the bus, put her on and I’ll be here at the other end”. (I chalked it up to a mistake at the time, but later learned the truth. (They were going to take her).
- His list included several officers, a detective, and a certain judge in the county. I think that is what ultimately saved my life. It had just been me I think they might have just blown it off.
- They had been investigating him, as well as my husband and me for months and we had no idea. Of course, we were cleared of any wrongdoing at all and I ended up testifying for the prosecution.
I was doing some research for this post, trying to find the CNN coverage that there was at the time, but I couldn’t find it. Which is really weird to me. I also found out that he died in 2004. I never saw him or heard from him again.
It was terrifying to know that all of this was going on without my knowledge! I was being followed, they tried to take my daughter, they had my schedule written down. Lucky for me he found the wrong person to do his dirty deeds!
I can look back now with ease, but it was very hard and terrifying at times to live through it. Especially when I found out they had involved not only my husband and I but my child. I was almost arrested for assault when I finally had come face to face with her. It had come out during the trial that she had had a gun that day. People are crazy!
