Welcome to a Secret Subject Swap. This week 6 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.
My subject is “When you write, do you hold back, try not to offend? Or do you say whatever you want, no matter who may or may not like it?”. It was submitted by my friend and the mother of all writing challenges Karen from BakingInATornado.com. Here goes:
When I first saw this prompt it filled me with anxiety but also a little thrill which are the absolute best prompts to get! If you aren’t apart of these creative writing challenges you are missing such a fantastic opportunity to sharpen those writing fangs.
This prompt, though, makes me anxious because way down deep I’m a people pleaser. It’s an annoying habit that I’ve been working hard to break, but still.
I feel so many things but I don’t often put them into words because I would never want to accidentally offend or hurt someone. I think enough of that goes on in the world without me adding to it.
I am getting braver each day and recently I put some pretty traumatic childhood events out in the interwebs. You don’t know how long I’ve wanted to write those words, but I didn’t want to cause my mom any pain while she was still living.
I found out much later in life that my mother was also molested as a child. To her mind, it was a normal way of life. Women were put here on this earth to serve men.
I don’t think my self-esteem could handle some of the negative trolls at this point in my life. I’m really not a controversial person. I’m a rule follower to a point. I believe strongly in the golden rule. ‘Treat others as you would like to be treated’.
I’m also a huge believer in karma. I try to always put ‘good’ out into the world and I believe that more often than not I receive ‘good’ right back.
I’m not a religious person, for many, many reasons, but I believe in the 10 commandments. I love to build people up, not tear them down and I don’t think that there is nearly enough of that out there in the world today.
So, I guess I do try not to offend, but I don’t feel as if I’m holding back, just speaking my own truth. Trying to live a life of positivity instead of negativity.
