Have you ever visited Greenville, South Carolina? This little gem is often skipped in lieu of it’s bigger, beach sisters Myrtle Beach or Charleston. While both are great Greenville has the old world charm of Charleston while still showing off its modern muscles.
It’s the perfect place for a stopover before and after both of the beach towns. I’ve visited a lot of different towns in my life, but Greenville is probably the most visitor-friendly that I’ve ever been to. There are plenty of parking spaces, a tree-lined Main Street, & a vibrant city-life.
You can take a horse & carriage ride down beautiful Main Street with its open-air restaurants & enough shopping to keep even the heartiest shopper happy. It’s an easy walk for the strollers, while still being handicapped accessible.
In the center of this beautiful city is the Reedy River. You can meander along its rocky banks, or take in the whole view from the Sky Bridge. Reedy Falls Park is a beautiful park green space built nestled beside the Reedy River Falls. A gorgeous waterfall that delights both young & old.
At the park, there are family movie nights, free concerts, or just lie on a blanket and people watch. It’s one of the most popular places in Greenville! The city keeps it beautifully landscaped with stunning blooms, flowering trees, and benches & swings throughout in strategic places.
There is also some great shopping along Main Street. Anything from candy to clothes. Looking for simple fair or long forgotten candies? You have to visit the MAST GENERAL STORE. They have over 500 types of candies and anything else you might be looking for! Anything from exclusive boutiques like J BRITT BOUTIQUE & LYN STRONG’S FINE ART JEWELRY to toy stores like O.P. TAYLOR TOY STORE or even
Are you getting hungry yet?
There are phenomenal restaurants in the blocks that make up Main Street. From my personal favorite GRILL MARKS for burgers, fries, & people watching sitting right out on the sidewalk. Looking for BBQ? You are in the South! STICKY FINGERS is THE place for ribs or BBQ. Breakfast lover? You have a multitude of choices. TUPELO HONEY & CREPE DU JOUR. Even fine dining choices like SOBY’S & HUSK GREENVILLE which bills itself as a “Farm-to-fork” restaurant serving up Southern dishes in hip digs!
Getting sleepy yet?
Greenville has you covered? Get it covered! Aw, nevermind. There are several beautiful hotels right along Main Street. You can fly in, drive in, or even bike in and walk to everything listed! The Courtyard by Marriott, The Westin Poinsett, or the Hyatt Regency will have you dreaming in no time.
Friday nights are the GREENVILLE HERITAGE MAIN STREET FRIDAYS from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. sponsored by Pepsi. Here you can listen or dance to a different sound each week. Free admission.
In April, you can find the iMAGINE UPSTATE FESTIVAL. This festival is where you will find more than 70 STEAM-related organizations providing interactive exhibits and live stage shows for the whole family.
Every Wednesday in May & October enjoy the FIDELITY MOONLIGHT MOVIES a free movie sponsored by Fidelity Investments. Do you love a great farmers’ market? The TD SATURDAY MARKET every Saturday morning.
In May we have the ARTISPHERE which is a festival celebrating the arts. It is sponsored by TD Banks.
Whether you’re a Greenville native or looking to visit for the first time, Artisphere offers a one-of-a-kind experience. From award-winning restaurants to some of the most talented artists gathered on one of the quaintest main streets in the south, Artisphere won’t disappoint.
By far the biggest event in Greenville is the WELLS FARGO RED, WHITE, & BLUE FESTIVAL another free admission activity that goes on every July 4th.
My personal favorite is the FALL FOR GREENVILLE it is a smorgasbord of food and great music. Here’s a video:
Are you a sports fan? We have a baseball team, a hockey team and we’re right down the road from the CAROLINA PANTHERS & the ATLANTA FALCONS. Would you rather participate than spectate? Are you a cycle-er? Try these great marathons & races. Is running your thing? Here’s a list of marathons of the two-legged variety.
The next time you’re headed to one of our South Carolina beaches. Do yourself a favor and plan a night or two in Greenville! You’ll want to come back again & again!
