Today’s post is a writing challenge. This is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who got their words and in what direction the writer will take them. Until now.
At the end of this post, you’ll find links to the other blogs featuring this challenge. Check them all out, see what words they got and how they used them.

Thank you Diane!
Here are the first installments of A Story As Old As Time if you’d like to catch up!
The landscape had drastically changed since they crossed the Mississippi River. It had changed from mountains, meadows & streams to become more flat, arid and light. There were hardly any trees and the sun beat down on them without relief.
“I hope Oregon doesn’t look like this!” Emily said. There was a layer of dust over everything from the hooves of the cattle and horses disturbing the worn trail.
“Me too”, Grace said from the back of the wagon where she was feeding little Patty her dinner.
“It doesn’t according to the Jim,” Matthew who was riding beside the wagon said. “He said it was green and lush and that the land was so versatile that you can grow anything.”
“How much longer do we have,” asked Emily. “I am so tired of this trail already! It’s been a month.”
“We’re not even halfway yet Emmy. The next part is supposed to be the worst. Super dry and hot just like this, but with less water.”
“We need to think about stopping for the night. I have a lot to do and I don’t want to squander the light,” Grace said. “I want to do some sewing. Patty is growing out of everything these days.”
“She’s getting so big,” Emmy grinned at Matthew. They were as close as family and even though Grace had given birth to Patty she belonged to all of them and they couldn’t love her more.”
“I see that they’re stopping up ahead. I’ll ride up and get the night’s plan,” Matthew told them as he spurred his horse to race toward the front of the trail of wagons.
When he made it to the front of the line he asked Hank, “we stopping for the night Hank?”
“Yeah, there’s a few who are not feeling well so we thought an early night might help,” Hank told him as he spits a wad of tobacco to the ground at the horse’s feet.
“What’s wrong with them?” Matthew asked.
“Don’t know, just feeling poorly I suppose,” Hank answered.
“I hope it’s nothing contagious. That could be a nightmare,” Matthew responded.
“True, we’ll keep an eye on it and if it looks like it’s spreadin’ we’ll have to start quarantining people to their wagons,” Hank said.
Matthew turned his horse back towards the wagons he shared with the women. He wanted to warn them to be careful who they were around the next few days. Feeling poorly would be a great hardship, but if little Patty were to come down with something it could be even worse.
Luckily, those two women, his family were very flexible and not ones to sit and complain about changes or hardships. The ride back worried him more than Hank’s words. He studied the families he passed and recognized sickness in quite a few.
He kicked at his horse to go faster. He had to get back to his family and keep them safe. They’d be camping well away from everyone until things cleared up. He wasn’t letting his family get sick on the trail, that would be a nightmare.
They’d be stopping in Independence in the next couple of days hopefully there is a doctor there. Until then…
