Today’s post is a writing challenge. This is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who got their words and in what direction the writer will take them. Until now.
At the end of this post, you’ll find links to the other blogs featuring this challenge. Check them all out, see what words they got and how they used them.
If you’d like to catch up here are links to the other six parts.

Matthew sat around an old barrel playing cards with a few of the other fellows in their wagon trail. They were spending an extra day camped so that everyone could rest and they could be proactive with the equipment repairs. ”
Fixing things before they go bad will save us days ahead,” James Ingall said for the 8th or 9th time.
“We know James, we know!” Timothy Parson said as he laughed and threw his cards down.”
“Okay, okay,” James laughed, “I’m just worried about our timeline. If we have any issues we could still on the journey during the winter months which is damn near impossible according to Chuck the guide. We’re ahead of schedule right now so I guess I’ll stop worrying so much.”
“Thank you!” Matthew, Timothy & Doc all said in unison.
Later that evening he sat around their wagon camp with Emily & Grace. He leaned back against the wagon smoking on an old pipe that he’d carried for years. He looked up at the stars and couldn’t believe everything that had happened over these last few months, but as he looked around at Emily packing up their dinner dishes and Grace changing little Patty into her nightclothes. He couldn’t believe how quickly little Patty was growing.
Grace pulled the baby up into her arms and started rocking back and forth trying to settle the baby down to sleep. “You look like a chimney when you smoke that thing. So where exactly are we?” She looked up at Matthew.
“Somewhere in Kentucky, I believe. That river we crossed was Ohio, but it could have also been the Big Sandy River. I’m not sure because they are so close together. Two days we should be reaching the Mississippi where we’ll cross on ferry boats if the water is passable. We won’t know until we get there.”
“I’m terrified of crossing the Mississippi. I heard the old guide talking about how dangerous it is,” Emily finally entering the conversation. “I can’t swim,” she added.
“It will be okay Emily. I’ll keep us all safe and make sure that we make it across with all of our belongings.” Matthew said trying to calm her fears.
“I wish I had a magic globe that I could look into and see the outcome,” Grace said.
Matthew and Emily both laughed.
“Once we get past the Mississippi it should be so much easier. The ground will level out with no more mountains to climb for a while. These mountains are wearing the horses out a lot more quickly than I expected. This extra day of rest should help with that,” Matthew said to the women.
“I have a little shortbread left if you two want a late-night snack,” she said pulling the tin out that she had used to make the rough little bread.
“The perfect end to a beautiful day,” Matthew said holding his hand out for his share.
“Anytime food is included is a perfect day for you,” Grace laughed standing up, “I have to lay this little one down, but I”ll be back for a piece. It’s delicious Emily. I had no idea you were such a good cook.”
“Well thank you, my lady,” Emily laughed as she pulled off a curtsy.
“We better get some sleep after this. We’ll be heading out at first light.”
Stay tuned to pt. 8
