Today’s post is a writing challenge. This is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who got their words and in what direction the writer will take them. Until now.
At the end of this post you’ll find links to the other blogs featuring this challenge. Check them all out, see what words they got and how they used them.

“Only one more week to go,” said Joe. “I can’t believe it! I can’t believe that the day is coming when we don’t have to start the day off by packing up. To be able to close a front door, or open a window. To have a shelf or a counter. I feel like we’ve been on this trail for years!”
“I know I can’t wait to sit by the fireplace drinking a hot coffee beverage or sleep in a real bed,” Emmy agreed. “I’m worried that it’s going to take forever to get everything done. I mean just think of all of the cabins and field clearing that is going to have to be done and it’s coming on Winter very soon. The mornings are already bringing a chill. It won’t be long before the ground will be frozen every morning.”
“Emmy, don’t worry,” Joe patted her shoulder. “Matt has it all figured out. He has lists after lists. He’s figured out how many trees each cabin will take and who is going to cut them down. He brought equipment to set up a sawmill so it’s a must to be along the water for power.”
“Everyone is getting the exact same amount of land and handoff one acre to build the “town”. We’re building a church first with an addon cooking area so you’ll get your fireplace pretty fast, but the rest may take a while. We’ll have our camp around the church and build outward. We took a vote and we think that we are going to do some fundraising for the land and hold a lottery at the same time to see what order the cabins get built. It’s the only fair way to do it. . There’s going to be a meeting on it tonight for everyone. Once everyone has a cabin we’ll be in full winter and we can work on our own things then and as soon as the ground thaws and all of the snow warnings have expired we’ll hold a massive field plowing campaign. By working together we’ll save a lot of time and hardships if we all tried to go at it alone.”
“As long as it stays that way,” Emmy said, “but you know people.”
“We even have a plan for that,” Joe said excited to get to talk about their plans. The women were often left out of these important conversations “for their own good” but they were living it too and deserved to be a part of the decisions in his opinion and he wasn’t alone. Matt felt the same way. We took a vote and we want Matt to be our official leader. Our Sheriff/Mayor for now and they made me his deputy.”
“Do you get a gold star,” she said sarcastically?
“What’s eatin’ you?” Joe said confused as he usually was when he got close to Emmy. All he could think about was kissing her and he had a feeling she’d slug him if he tried.
“I’m just tired of being left out of everyone’s plans. Matt and Grace with Patty, you have your plans but what about me? I can’t be a third wheel at Grace and Matt’s they just got married. I can’t build a house on my own.”
“But Emmy you have lots of plans. You’re the new teacher. We’ll be using the church as a schoolhouse too.”
That’s not what she had in mind. She wanted him to finally kiss her. To sweep her off her feet as Matt did Grace, but it never happened. For weeks, they’ve flirted with each other Emmy trying to let him know how she felt, but he was clueless.
“Oh nevermind,” she stomped off.
“Women!” Joe said truly confused about what had just happened.
Matt had walked around the corner just in time to witness his frustration. He slapped him on the shoulder. “You’ll be saying that when your 70!” he laughed.
“I made Emmy mad and I have no idea how,” he said sullenly.
“Aw well, you too need to stop dancing around each other. Just kiss her man, Just kiss her! She can’t talk when her lips are occupied,” he advised his friend. He really wanted these two to get together. He loved Emmy like a sister and Joe like a brother. They need to be one family. He thought of the life they could all build together.
After getting a blast of bravery from Matt he stormed off searching for her. When he spotted her by the fire he marched right up to her not caring who was watching. He turned Emmy around the irritation still showing in her eyes. He grabbed her and kissed her like he was a man dying. He may be when he let go was his only thought.
The strangest thing happened. After her initial shock, she started kissing him right back. As the kiss deepened the applause began. Everyone already knew what they were just figuring out. They had a feeling that there would be another wedding before to long.
Stay tuned for part 22
