A Story As Old As Time Pt. 19

hanging crystal in front of gold garland

Today’s post is a writing challenge. This is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who got their words and in what direction the writer will take them. Until now.

At the end of this post, you’ll find links to the other blogs featuring this challenge. Check them all out, see what words they got and how they used them.

I’m using:

mistletoe ~ garland ~ chimney ~ stockings ~ crystal ball

It was submitted by: https://crazymamallama.blogspot.com/

Thank you, Sarah!

This is a story that I started 19 long months ago and have added to it once a month. If you’d like to catch up here are the rest of the installments. I really hope you enjoy it.

Emmy was planning a wedding and she was taking her job very seriously. “Grace! I need to talk to you!” She came running from the front of the train carrying a giant box. Her eyes were shining bright and she was smiling from ear to ear. “Hurry! Into the wagon!” Her excited evident.

“Emmy, I have too much to do right now. Let’s talk later,” she said continuing to pack up as she talked.

“I promise it will only take a minute, please! It’s very important and you won’t be sorry.” She was not going to take no for an answer.

“Fine, fine but I only have a minute,” She said passing Patty to Matthew. She climbed up into the wagon behind Emmy who was breathing from running with the box. “What is that?”

“Well, this is what I want to talk to you about. I know you said you were wearing your pink dress for the wedding, but Belinda Grimes pulled me aside and she said that she had hidden this deep inside her trunk because she couldn’t bear to part with it even though space was so limited. It’s her wedding dress and she wants to see if you’d like to wear it, but you know I had to okay it first but once I saw it I got a great idea for the theme of the wedding!”

“Theme? What does that even mean Emmie? We just want to get married we don’t need themes or grandeur.” Grace pulling her back down to reality.

“Just promise me that you will look at it and listen to my idea and if you don’t like it that’s fine too, but I think you’ll love it.”

Grace put her hands on her hips, “well let’s see this magical dress.”

“That’s exactly it! Magical!” Emmy exclaimed laying the box on the trunk next to her. “Okay, turn around until I tell you,”

Grace huffed her breath as she turned around, “Fine!”

“Okay, turn around,” she said.

Grace didn’t even make it all the way around before she said, “Oh!” and gasped. It was a dark green dress made of velvet with silk ties around the middle and a beautiful collar, but what really set it off was the short rabbit fur jacket and muff that went with it.

“Emmy, I am so happy that you are in my life. When I think of how we met and stuck it makes me cry. I would never have made it this far without you. You are my sister in spirit and in love. I don’t ever want to lose you in my life,” she said as her eyes flooded. She pulled Emmy into a hug.

“I love you to Grace. You’ll never get rid of me,” she said hugging her back, “but back to the wedding! Just think of a magical Christmas wedding. I have it all worked out in my head and with a few contributions it will beautiful even on the trail.” Emmy said ticking it off much as Matthew had done a couple of hours earlier.

The dress was stunning and as much as she hated to admit it she immediately fell in love with not only the dress but the idea. Emmy was amazing she thought to put this much love and care into it.

“Yes! Yes of course! Go on tell me your ideas,” Grace said running her fingers down the front of the dress.

“Well, some people brought some Christmas trappings so I thought I’d gather some garland and Belinda also has a crystal candelabra that’s been in her family for years and I’m going to borrow the crystal balls (her idea) and hang them from the trees. The guys are going to make a rock oven and chimney to cook and it would be something beautiful to stand in front of with the twinkling crystal balls and we’re going to hang some stockings from the fireplace.

The women had already talked about adding little gifts in the stockings. We’re also going to hang mistletoe because you know it’s just so romantic. I have a dark green dress as well but nowhere near as fancy as this one, but it will work nicely,” she stopping for a quick breath, “what do you think?”

“I… oh” was all that she said as she flung herself at Emmy. She was no longer attempting to hold her tears back. Her eyes were filled with love. “I love it, all of it. It sounds so beautiful and special! Yes, of course, I’ll wear this gorgeous dress with pleasure. Thank her for me now, but I will talk to her in private in a little while to tell her exactly what this means to me that she would allow me to wear her wedding dress.”

“Just keep everything quiet and I’ll take care of everything! And hide that dress!” She remembered as she climbed back out of the wagon. She had a lot to do in a little bit of time. As she rounded the corner she almost ran into Matthew & Joe.

“Oops sorry,” she said giggling,” She patted Matthew on the back, “Got plans to make! There’s going to be a weddin’ I hear!” She joked as she headed back to Belinda.

“I hope I get that lucky one day,” Joe said watching Emmy as she ran towards the front. It was a look that wasn’t lost on Matthew. So that is how the wind is blowing, I’ll be damned he thought.

“Maybe you will, maybe you will!” Matthew said clapping him on the back smiling as he walked away.

STAY TUNED FOR PART 20.
